St Joseph’s College Curriculum Intent

At the heart of our curriculum provision is the promotion of the school’s Catholic Lasallian values and the promotion of Character. The curriculum reflects the school’s local context, aiming to develop confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives. Students will leave the college empowered and confident in contributing to wider society.

At St Joseph’s College we offer students a broad and balanced curriculum. Our curriculum is planned and sequenced to promote lifelong learning as well as an enjoyment of learning. The college provides a wide range of academic and vocational subjects to ensure access and challenge for all learners. The broad range of subjects offered enables students to develop deep knowledge and skills. These skills enable students to become successful learners, ready to positively contribute to society. The key goals of the curriculum at St Joseph's College are:

Students demonstrate respect- for faith, self, others, learning and their community
Students foster a strength of character, and resilience that will help them to cope with choices and overcome the challenges they are likely to encounter in life
Students become lifelong learners with adaptable employability and enterprise skills
Students develop deep subject knowledge across a wide range of areas through our broad and balanced curriculum

Students develop into global citizens, making a positive contribution to British society

The college also promotes a curriculum beyond the classroom through offering students a wide range of experiences to develop cultural capital. Subjects provide additional learning contexts including Drama productions and high performing sports teams. The curriculum also promotes Enterprise skills through The Peter Jones Academy.

The Curriculum is designed and co-ordinated by subject leaders through close work with the leadership team. Students study all National Curriculum subjects in a three year Key Stage 3. Each curriculum is developed to provide a programme of study that suits the learning needs of all students and to share with students a passion and expertise in their areas of study.

The effectiveness and impact of the curriculum is under constant review. We make changes to what pupils learn across the school and within subjects based on their feedback, progress and aspirations.

Character Lessons at SJC – Personal Development in the curriculum

Character lessons at SJC aim to develop students’ ability to thrive beyond the classroom, so that they have the skills not just to perform academically but also to succeed in the workplace and in their personal relationships. Years 7, 8 and 9 are following the PiXL Character Strategy, which outlines five main skills – Leadership, Organisation, Initiative, Resilience, and Communication.

Alongside these skills there are also ‘Them and Us’, ‘PiXL Orate’ and ‘Futures’ programmes that are taught to students to help develop British Values, Presentation and Aspiration respectively. The programme of study is designed to build year on year, for example starting with Year 7 ‘Organisation’ to promote good organisation in the transition to secondary school, and then building in years 8 and 9 to begin considering how organisation might affect students in the future.
