St John Baptiste de La Salle
St. Joseph's College stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of St. John Baptiste de La Salle, whose pedagogical vision continues to shape our ethos and guide our mission.
Born in Reims, France, in 1651, St. John Baptiste de La Salle dedicated his life to the service of God and the education of youth, leaving an indelible mark on the world of education.
From an early age, St. John Baptiste de La Salle exhibited a deep sense of piety and devotion to God. After completing his studies in theology and being ordained as a priest, he was drawn to the plight of the poor and marginalized in society. Moved by a profound sense of compassion, he founded the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the De La Salle Brothers, in 1680. St. John Baptiste de La Salle's approach to education was revolutionary for its time. Instead of focusing solely on the intellectual development of students, he emphasised the importance of nurturing their spiritual growth and character formation. His pedagogical methods prioritised the needs of the whole person, recognising the inherent dignity and worth of each individual. |
Central to St. John Baptiste de La Salle's educational philosophy was the belief that education should be accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status or background. He dedicated himself to providing quality education to poor and disadvantaged children, establishing schools throughout France and beyond.
In addition to his contributions to education, St. John Baptiste de La Salle was a prolific writer and
spiritual guide. His writings on topics such as prayer, meditation, and the Christian life continue to
inspire and guide countless individuals on their spiritual journey.
