Numeracy at St Joseph's College
Embracing Excellence: Elevating Numeracy Standards
At St Joseph's College, we recognise the pivotal role numeracy plays in shaping the academic success and future prospects of our students. We are committed to raising our standards of numeracy across all levels, fostering a culture of mathematical excellence within our school community.
Importance of Numeracy
Numeracy is a fundamental skill that transcends academic boundaries and is essential for success in various aspects of life. A strong foundation in numeracy empowers students to:
Excel in academic pursuits, particularly in mathematics and related disciplines.
Navigate the challenges of daily life, making informed decisions based on numerical data.
Prepare for future careers that increasingly demand quantitative and analytical skills.
All Key Stage 3 classes utilise their first five minutes of their maths lesson by doing their numeracy ninja to improve their mental and numerical skills.
Weekly Numeracy Quiz during Form Time
To instill a regular practice of numeracy skills, our students actively engage in a weekly numeracy quiz during form time. This not only serves as a tool for continuous assessment but also cultivates a habit of consistent mathematical thinking.
Intervention Programs
Recognizing the unique needs of our students, we have implemented targeted intervention programs to provide additional support and personalized guidance:
Year 7 Intervention during Tutor Time
One-to-One Support with a Sixth Form Mathematician: Experienced sixth form mathematicians provide individualized attention to Year 7 students, addressing specific areas of challenge and reinforcing foundational concepts.
Led by Math Teachers: Our dedicated mathematics teachers lead targeted intervention sessions, ensuring a focused approach to address the needs of Year 7 students.
Year 8 and 9 Intervention on Mondays
One-to-One Support with a Sixth Form Mathematician: Building on the success of the Year 7 intervention, sixth form mathematicians continue to provide personalized support to Year 8 and 9 students.
Small Group Teacher-Led Sessions: In addition to one-on-one support, our experienced teachers lead small group sessions, fostering collaborative learning environments.
The Impact of Numeracy Intervention
Through these intervention programs, we aim to:
Bridge learning gaps and ensure that every student has a solid understanding of mathematical concepts.
Boost confidence and enthusiasm for numeracy, laying the groundwork for continued success.
Provide a supportive environment where students can thrive academically and develop a lifelong love for mathematics.
