Sixth Form Student Support
There is considerable support at St Joseph’s for our Sixth Form students that begins with our specialist Pastoral Team.
Tutorial Support
Every student is allocated a Pastoral Leader at the start of Year 12. The pastoral leader works closely with pupils supporting them through academic and personal issues and guiding them towards their chosen vocation. Pastoral leaders deliver the pastoral curriculum in fortnightly tutorial sessions and track pupil progress and attendance regularly throughout the year.
Bursary support
A discretionary or nominated bursary is available for students who come from a low income background (see the bursary section of the sixth form website for details)
Learning Support
A dedicated learning support team is on hand to assist pupils with learning needs in their subject and with social interaction. Dyslexia, dyscalculia or dyspraxia testing is available and associated examination support and extra time is utilised where appropriate.
EAL (English as an Additional Language) support
We have a dedicated EAL unit that specialises in supporting students who speak another language with literacy and communication support. Bridging units to support pupils with A Level subjects are offered. English courses are run to improve and support language development and students are encouraged to complete the English Language GCSE within the academic year.
Academic Support
Intervention programs take place in every subject area for students who underperform or struggle with difficult content. A staffed intervention program runs during school hours for students to attend when they have non-contact periods.
Vocational Support
All Year 12 students receive a careers interview in early October and are offered a further interview at the start of Year 13. Students recieve regular university, apprenticeship, open day and careers correspondence, Students are visited by experts in the field and like-minded successful ex-students.
LifeSkills Support
Students complete a Life Skills programme led by external companies and the Sixth Form Pastoral Team. Throughout the programme students engage in a variety of activities designed to develop knowledge and confidence with aspects such as applying to university/apprenticeships, CV writing, budgeting, home maintenance, first aid, team work and leadership.
