Saint Joseph’s College Work Experience

Work Experience is a very important part of our programme to prepare students for life beyond St Joseph’s College. The placements are secured by the students themselves, although of course we support when needed. In the past students have found their experience invaluable for their post 16 education applications,  UCAS personal statements and apprenticeship applications and have secured part time jobs and apprenticeships through their work experience.

Our Programme
  • Year 8 students complete an internal placement with our reception team as duty boy.
  • Year 10 students undertake two-day work placement in the summer term.
  • Groups of KS4 and Key Stage 5 (KS5) students embark on workplace visits.
  • Year 12 students participate in a one week work experience placement in the summer term and others at the discretion of the Head of Sixth Form.
Aims
  • For students to apply skills, knowledge and understanding from the classroom.
  • To improve attainment by making learning more relevant.
  • To develop transferable skills and understand the expectations of the workplace.
  • To develop students’ economic understanding.
  • To widen their awareness of opportunities in order to make informed choices about education, training and employment.
  • To introduce students to a particular occupation or industry (in certain cases).
  • To support students with the transition from school to work.
  • For students to relate to adults other than family and college staff with greater confidence.
  • Identify the skills and knowledge associated with a particular pathway via a specific occupation.
 
Principles
Students will have the opportunity to:
  • Attend an assembly on health and Safety delivered by SLT.
  • Students will use their Unifrog accounts to record their placements.
  • Complete a two-day work placement in year 10 or 5 day in year 12.
  • Complete a placement journal to prepare for, and reflect on, their work experience.
  • Participate in debriefing and feedback activities.

  • Work experience is designed to meet the needs of all students irrespective of race, class, gender or disability; every effort is made to combat prejudiced attitudes on the part of employers; students are actively encouraged to take up non-gender-stereotypical placements.
  • The college is committed to raising the aspirations of all students; the aim of placements is to gain experience of the workplace and not necessarily linked to future career plans.
  • The EAL Co-ordinator,  SENCO,  Learning Support department and mentors are involved in the work experience programme.
