Part A: Curriculum music
This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.
Music Curriculum:
The time allocated for music at St. Joseph’s College in Years 7, 8 and 9 are two hours per a fortnightly timetable. This means students receive one hour per week of music lesson on average.
The Key Stage 3 Curriculum in Music includes the following key components:
Music Opportunities:
Students learn to perform on the keyboard, drums/percussion and guitar/ukelele based on the different areas of study throughout Key Stage 3. Students perform as a class (music ensemble) or demonstrate as a solo within the lessons. They have the opportunity to build on existing instrumental skills and develop other instrumental skills further in the classroom.
Qualifications:
Students can pursue various music qualifications, primarily through the GCSE and A-level/BTEC Level 3 pathways:

Music Tuition
Peripatetic lessons in schools involve specialist music teachers visiting schools to provide individual or small group instrumental and vocal lessons. These lessons are usually scheduled during the school day, allowing students to learn an instrument or receive vocal training in addition to their regular music curriculum. Peripatetic lessons help enhance students' musical skills and broaden their learning experiences. At St. Joseph’s College we offer music tuition one on one (or in small groups) through an
organisation called Open 2 Music. The company offer a free taster lesson before committing to having the instrumental sessions.
The instruments offered are:
Prices:
20 minutes One-to-One session are £13 each. For more information and enquiries visit: www.music-in-education.co.uk or email: [email protected] or telephone: 07801 813062
Pupil Premium Students:
Students who are eligible for pupil premium and show a special musical talent get the opportunity to receive a music scholarship where the instrumental tuition fees are covered by the College. Please note that there is a limited number of spaces for the scholarship programme.
Music outside the classroom:
Music education outside the classroom encompasses various activities and programs designed to enhance students' musical experiences and skills beyond the regular curriculum. In St. Joseph’s College we have different music clubs and extra-curricular activities for students to join.

At St. Joseph’s College we often plan a variety of music experiences to enrich students' musical education. These experiences include:
- School Concerts and Performances: Opportunities for students to perform in front of an audience. This includes singing during the Chapel Assemblies at St. Joseph’s College, The Christmas Carol Service where students have the oppor-tunity to sing and play. The Creative Arts Faculty Showcase: an event organised by the Creative Arts departments (Music, Art, Drama and DT) to showcase their talents in front of an audience.
- Workshops and Masterclasses: Sessions with professional musicians or mu-sic educators. The College holds a Cultural Day where students are exposed to different cultural experiences. A dedicated instructor of Steel Pans comes to school to offer music workshops with the students during that day. In March, stu-dents went on a free Rap Music workshop organised and funded by the Croy-don Music Heritage Trail that celebrates Croydon’s rich musical influences and took place in the Museum of Croydon. Students had a masterclass by one of the producers of Stormzy on how to produce a rap.
- Music Trips and Tours: Visits to concerts, theatres, and music festivals. This autumn Key Stage 4 students of Music and Drama will have the opportunity to go and see the Award-Winning musical Tina, the Tina Turner Musical. This in-cludes a pre-show workshop highlighting and demonstrating backstage careers in the theatre industry, for a heavily subsidised price of £10, as part of career development after GCSE.
- Collaborations with External Music Organizations: Partnerships with other Lasallian schools orchestras, bands, or music services for joint projects and per-formances.
These experiences aim to develop further students' musical skills, confidence, and appreciation for different musical styles and traditions.
