Speakers Bank
Two Year 10 pupils, Daniel Badejo (10.5) and Raymon Hunte (10.5) took part in the annual Jack Petchey Foundation SpeakersBank "Speak out" regional final this term, held at Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise School for Girls.
The workshops are run in state secondary schools and give the students tools and techniques that they can use immediately to improve their communication skills and future prospects. At the end of the day students are able to:
Deliver and present with confidence and impact
Understand the importance of structured arguments
Give and receive written and verbal evaluations.
The pupils were selected after taking part in a workshop organised by the English Department, and were shortlisted from sixty pupils into a group of six. The pupils then spoke at a Year 10 assembly and Daniel and Raymon were selected as the finalists.
The night itself was energetic and nerve wracking as the pupils had to speak to a packed audience filled with pupils, parents, teachers and dignitaries (including the Mayor of Croydon) from all over the borough. Both boys spoke brilliantly, with Daniel doing a speech on rapping, and Raymon bravely talking about women to an audience filled with Norbury Manor girls!
Although neither pupil won the top prize, they both did amazingly well and the English Department are very proud of them both.
