The four specialist PE teachers are assisted by several other members of staff. Facilities include a Sports Hall (29m × 16.5m), a Gymnasium (70ft × 40ft), an indoor swimming pool (25m × 12.5m) plus spectator accommodation for 150, four hard tennis courts, two football pitches, one rugby pitch and a grassed area on site laid out with grids and a five-a-side pitch. In the summer there is a grass athletics track and cricket square, with artificial cricket pitches and two cricket nets, a new long jump facility and circles for shot and discus. The Department is well supplied with equipment for all major games and athletics.
There are six classes of approximately 30 boys in each of Years 7 to 11. Years 7 and 8 receive one single (50 minute) and one double (100 minute) lessons of PE per week. Pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11 receive one double (100 minute) lesson per week. All PE periods are in half-year groups. There is no compulsory PE in Years 12 and 13 although the College runs a 1st XI football team and a 1st XV rugby team.
Wednesday afternoon games is encouraged. In addition, the department runs a GCSE PE course which is available, as an option, to students in Years 10 and 11. Students in Year 12 and 13 may also study GCSE PE as well as A level PE.
The PE Department places great emphasis on major games in Years 7 to 9. All double games lessons are divided into 9-week modules in the winter and spring terms and boys are assessed on the following activities at the end of each block: Football, Rugby, Swimming and Basketball. Activities offered in single periods are: Personal Fitness Training, Gymnastics, Hockey, Swimming (personal survival), Short Tennis and Badminton. During the Summer term boys follow Cricket, Athletics and Tennis during the double periods and are assessed at the end of each four or five week module. Students are expected to bring the correct kit for activities as required under PE procedure. After double lessons they are expected to shower.
The College has a strong tradition in sports and runs school teams in several sports. Football is very strong and our six teams are successful in Croydon and Surrey competitions. Each year group has a cricket team and some year groups have rugby teams. We compete annually in Croydon competitions in athletics, swimming and cross country running and we are currently Croydon diving champions. Intramural competitions are organised in most sports during lunchtimes and after school. |
