Students may have special educational needs for a variety of reasons, including medical, emotional, learning and behavioural problems.  These are needs which are additional to an average or a normal range.  They are often identified at primary level where educational provision is usually determined.  This lasts through secondary and into further education or until the student is able to overcome the need.

St Joseph’s College provides this provision by supporting the student in class though differentiated resources, by classroom assistant support or by one to one teaching.  Students particularly weak in literacy and numeracy receive their English and Maths lessons in small groups and further individual work is undertaken where necessary. In addition to the work by the Chaplain, a Behaviour Counsellor supports Students with significant emotional or behaviour concerns.

The Learning Support team work closely with all departments and Heads of Year to raise awareness of the students’ needs.

We work closely with LEA provided services including the Educational Psychology Service and the Hearing and Visual Impairment Service and with NHS services including Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and CAMHS.

Those students who have English as an Additional Language receive support from a specialist teacher.
