The History Department is based in a suite of four well-equipped rooms and is staffed by enthusiastic and successful teachers who use their individual strengths to great effect.

All students study History in their first three years in the College, following courses which comply with the National Curriculum Keystage 3 syllabus. History may be studied as an optional subject to GCSE level in Years 10 and 11. The course followed is "Modern World History". In the 6th form a modular course is offered which lead to AS and A Level. It comprises aspects of 19th and 20th Century history and warfare from 1740 to 1945.

The key aims of the History Department are to help our students to locate themselves in time and to promote positive enthusiasm for the subject. As a result, our students should develop a permanent interest in the past and a desire to read, explore and satisfy this curiosity for the rest of their lives. This should assist them to appreciate and enjoy the national, European and other cultural inheritances which they will experience as they travel.

A further important aim is to help our students to train their minds, through the study of history, to think intelligently and critically about the problems of our own day.

Students should understand that these problems have their roots in the past and can only be fully explained through a study of their history.
