There are three full time members of staff in the Geography Department. The aim of the Geography Courses taught in the College is to give students a knowledge and understanding of the world they live in. They carry out their studies at a variety of scales from local to global and examine the problems and issues which result from the interaction of people and their environments. Students are taught about the variety of the physical landscape both in Britain and abroad. The social and economic geography of the UK is studied in depth and case studies of countries from around the world are studied in all year groups for the Key Stages.
Geography enables students to acquire a range of useful skills, especially those relating to the understanding of maps. The Department has an excellent video collection which, together with ICT, can enhance the learning process. Students have access to a wide range of text books and teaching resources. The Department has three classrooms where most lessons are held. They are encouraged to use libraries both in school and at home.
In Years 7 to 9 the course is based on National Curriculum guidelines and includes topics such as weather, rock types, volcanoes, transport, farming, and towns and cities set in the context of regions, such as London, Italy and Brazil. At Keystage 4 (GCSE) students may opt to follow the OCR Geography Syllabus C, a modular examination. Topics include the study of population, rural and urban settlement, economic systems and development, and the use of resources. These themes are set in a wide range of regional contexts.
In the sixth form, students follow the Edexcel ‘Specification B' AS/2 course. This is a modular course which gives a balanced understanding of physical and human geography and allows students to fully develop both research and fieldwork skills. An individual investigation, devised by the student with teacher guidance, is an integral part of this course. Geography courses at the school provide pupils with a range of opportunities for field work. Students also participate in the Worldwise Quiz organised by the Geographical Association.
