The English Department strives to develop students' ability to read, write, speak and listen. Language skills are taught using literature, Media, IT and Drama. Almost all rooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards to enhance the teaching and learning using the internet and Smart software. Classes can be booked on to computer suites.

The department sets its classes for effective teaching with more able sets larger than the less able groups. Gifted and talented and struggling learners also have their needs met through differentiation and effective use of assessment data.

The KS3 Strategy is planned and delivered using the four stage lesson format. Students are encouraged to express their ideas and to respond appropriately to others in their speaking and listening.

At KS4 students are required to plan, organise and deliver individual, drama and group talks fluently using Standard English. Students are expected to develop their understanding and response to a variety of texts including fiction, non-fiction, media, websites, poetry and drama texts. Independent reading is of paramount importance.

Students develop accurate, well organised writing appropriate for purpose and audience.

Results have been consistently above local and national averages with 67% of English candidates and 64% of Literature candidates achieving A* to C.

The college has a six form entry and operates a thirty period week. There are seven full time and two part time staff currently teaching English in seven classrooms. There are four fifty minute periods of English per week. English Literature is offered at A-Level.

At GCSE the AQA syllabus is taught and at A-Level, Edexcel is offered. English teachers direct an annual school play as well as an after school drama club for KS3 students.
