Design and Technology is a developing area at St. Joseph’s College.  In recent years new subjects have been introduced and the department is looking at introducing new subjects to the curriculum.

The department is housed in a separate building, which contains two recently refurbished ICT and CAD/CAM suites both with an Interactive Whiteboard and three well equipped workshops.

All students undertake a comprehensive foundation course at KS3, experiencing the different Technology areas enabling them to make informed decisions regarding GCSE option choices.  The underlying philosophy of the department is “Learn by Doing”.  We are also dedicated to raising standards and achievement.

The Technology Department is made up from teachers with widely differing backgrounds and skills, each of whom brings richness to the work we do.  We are supported by a Technician to assist with the practical delivery of the subject.

We meet regularly to discuss whole school issues, department issues and to compare notes on students and classes.  The emphasis for the staff working in the department is teamwork, sharing ideas, experience and skills to produce a better working environment for ourselves and our students.

The department has a procedure for operating a system of setting at KS3.  Sets include two top sets, one middle set and a lower set.  This encourages students to set challenging targets for GCSE examinations.

The department currently offers GCSE in Graphics, Resistant Materials and GCE 3D Product Design.  We are currently looking at offering GCE Graphics.  The department is also looking at offering a BTEC.  Students at the College also attend Croydon College where they are taught Construction and Engineering.

All students follow the National Curriculum using Schemes of Work based on the QCA guidelines at KS3, with regular testing after each module.  The department has its own scheme of works, which is based largely on the published course, but amended to suit our needs and to ensure appropriate coverage of the National Curriculum.

If you have the drive and dedication we would like to meet you.
